The Board and Members of the Kensington Baseball Club extend our deepest sympathy to Darren and the Roberts family on the recent passing of Gerry, a true legend of the Kensington Cardinals and of baseball in SA.

Gerry was one of Kensington’s great players, being the 91st A Grade player to don the Kensington uniform and over 11 seasons played 180 games. He played in 6 Claxton Shield Carnivals and was the Champion team on three occasions. He was named in an All Australian Side in 1957.

Gerry was twice a premiership player for Kensington, both in 1956 and 1959. Gerry took all before him during the 1966-67 season playing for the combined Norwood Redsox where he won the Shipway Medal for the B&F, the 5AD Batting Trophy with an average of .464, the Advertiser Best All-Rounder and the News Trophy for the Fairest and Most Brilliant Player.

He was selected to play against a visiting USA Services Team and also against a visiting Japanese team. On three occasions he was a representative in the Chrysler Cup Night Baseball Championships. Gerry was also selected as a player in the Kensington Baseball Club’s All-time All-stars Team.

In addition to having a distinguished playing career Gerry was instrumental in the founding of the Central Districts Baseball Club in 1962 along with John Watts, Ted Ramsey and Norm White and in 1965 coached Central’s A Grade (Minor A) side to a premiership. Gerry also held administrative roles, President of Central Districts (being awarded Life Membership in 1976) also State Claxton Shield selector in 1969 and a member of the SABL Promotions Committee from 1974 to 1979.
