Our Inaugural KBC Women’s Baseball team played it’s first season in 2017-2018.
In their inaugural season the team finished with an overall record of 5-6 (finishing seventh out of 13 teams) but the record and position on the ladder was not indicative of the spirit the team played with and the continual improvement they exhibited as the season went on.
The highlight of the season being their round three victory over Henley and Grange. In their toughest test of the season up until that time, the team showed their abilities both with the bat and in the field as well as their never-say-die attitude. The first three innings were a tight affair, with the team taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning behind starter Georgina Gordon’s maximum three pitching innings, off one hit ball. Henley and Grange fought back in the top of the fourth scoring the maximum allowable seven runs to take a 7-1 lead.
The team, however, would not be denied, fighting back in the bottom half of the innings to score seven runs of their own to win the game 8-7. The team showed great discipline at the plate in the innings as well as capitalising on a fielding miscue that kept the innings alive. The highlights of the comeback being a steal of home by Julie LeMessurier, an RBI double by Tracey Robinson, followed by a change of pitcher as Georgina was called to the plate only to be sent to first on an intentional walk from the opposition coach. Jenny Barker then pushed the batters around with a walk to first for loaded bases. Finally, the opposition coach changed pitcher again and right fielder Lisa Hayton took one for the team with a bases loaded hit by pitch to bring home the winning run, capping the 8-7 victory.
The widespread skills of the team were evident in the year end awards with six different players taking home the six awards presented (three by the coaches, three by the club). The recipients of the coach’s awards being: Jenny Barker (Most Spirited Team Player) for her heart and passion whilst playing; Olivia Harvey (Most Outstanding Team Player) for her dedication to the team; and Jessica Henshall (Most Versatile Team Player) for her willingness to play most of the positions on the diamond. The club awards were as follows: Georgina Gordon (Most Valuable Player) who excelled both in hitting (leading the team in most offensive categories) as well as being the team’s best pitcher; Salli Tanner (Best Batting) for leading the team in hits and finishing second in batting average. In addition to her hitting, Salli’s adaptability and skill in the field led to her selection as the team’s representative in the SAWBL All-Star team which played against the State team on Diamond One at West Beach. Vanessa Ho (Coach’s Award) took the last trophy for her eagerness to try new skills and apply them throughout the season to develop into a reliable player.
